Oceans of Glass

  • Kingscote South Australia Australia (map)

OCEANS OF GLASS used historic and contemporary glass collected on the beaches around Kingscote. Both primary and secondary students were involved and each student made a small artwork from the glass with recycled copper wire to connect individual pieces.

A frame was made from driftwood and a grid of copperwire was then used to attach the individual pieces to make three large collective artworks. It is still displayed at the Kingscote Campus today.

This workshop was a part of the marine studies programme at KICE (Kangaroo Island Community Education) Kingscote Campus. The programme incorporated science and the arts through regular beach monitoring, data collection and education and art workshops. The students were involved in data collection of marine and plant species, monitoring water quality and doing bird counts as well as the collection and measuring of different types of rubbish found on the beaches.
